Publications and Brochures Concerning Nozzle HydraulicsA description of the Vortexx® technology and its results is available as a paper prepared for presentation at the 1997 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 4-6 March 1997:
New Nozzle Hydraulics Increase ROP for PDC and Rock Bits
A paper presented at the CADE/CAODC Spring Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in April 1999 describes how Vortexx® nozzles more than double the rate of penetration. Review of Drilling Performance with Fluted Nozzles (PDF, 183 KB)
A journal article published in 2001 in Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering introduces some of the novel features of non-circular asymmetric turbulent jet flows. The computational methods employed to verify those features are outlined and details about the differences in power levels are presented. Significant advantages over standard circular nozzles are shown in some cases. Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 191 (2001) 515-524.
An article from the Oil and Gas Journal, May 10, 1999, describing how new developments in the geometric design of fluted drill-bit nozzles increase penetration rates while extending bit life. Fluted nozzles increase penetration rates, extend bit life. (PDF, 2.2 MB) Vendor BrochuresSmith Tool: Vortexx® Hydraulics Technical Bulletin (PDF, 660KB)
